Ra Desperidos - Tired of Strugglin'
Ra Desperidos open their debut album, Tired of Strugglin', with the lofty claim that five to ten years from now, the listener's going to miss them. This feels like a rather foolish prophecy considering this trio hasn't even made a name for themselves, yet the material contained within the 17 tracks is an indication that their opinion may hold some merit. By no means are Ra Desperidos the next big thing, yet their streetwise rap anthems and cocky boasting is edged with a gritty attitude that forces you to pay closer attention to the lyrical flow spit savagely by group members Mr T N Tee, Menenzi and Gold. Sounding like the 21st century reincarnation of Onyx mixed with the funky laidback tones of Snoop Dogg, and slick production that recalls a less-experienced Dre, these three men take their game serious, and blow up the mic at every occasion offered to them. The title track, aided by the soulful r&b crooning of Louis Cross feels like an exceprt from Tha Eastsidaz, while "We Want That" finds Ra Desperidos announcing their hopes and dreams that success would surely bring them. The bulky verses often shine with intelligence, yet unfortunately are overshadowed by the thug postuering that most likely got them noticed in the first place. If Ra Desperidos can take the best elements found on Tired of Strugglin', and focus their attention on maturing their weaknesses, they could certainly find themselves on the next level of hip-hop stardom, where they wouldn't have to struggle anymore. As it is, aside from the often amusing threats and tirades from the trio, Tired of Strugglin' is a solid rap release that one can only assume is the very beginning of Ra Desperidos climb up the ladder of success. ~ Jason D.
