Review by William Ruhlmann
As advertised, this album contains many of Kris Kristofferson's "super hits, " though it's worth noting that, with the exception of the gold, chart-topping "Why Me," none of them were super hits for Kristofferson: "Me and Bobby McGee" was a country hit for Roger Miller, then a pop hit for Janis Joplin; "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" was a country hit for Ray Stevens and for Johnny Cash; "For the Good Times" topped the country charts for Ray Price; Sammi Smith did the same with "Help Me Make It Through the Night"; and both Roger Miller and Tompall and the Glaser Brothers had country hits with "Lovin' Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)." The versions here are Kristofferson's, with "Me and Bobby McGee," "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33," and "Casey's Last Ride" (the last two among the several songs that weren't actually hits, but are among the songwriter's best material) in live renditions. Read More
