'Green' your Thanksgiving
Make your Thanksgiving celebration environmentally friendly when choosing cleaning supplies, cutlery, and decorations
With Thanksgiving fast approaching, Canadians are honing their appetites and preparing their palates for turkey, pumpkin pie and stuffing. Though overindulging is common during the holiday season, this excess consumption can be harmful to the environment. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, Canadians produce an extra 900,000 tonnes of garbage. Canadian families can do their part to reduce this excess waste by adopting a few new traditions during the holiday season.
Here are a few ways to 'green' your Thanksgiving.Thursday October 9th:

Keep This Candy Handy for Halloween
While it may take a stretch of the imagination to call candy in any shape or form "healthy," you can feel a bit better about indulging with this Halloween goody bag packed with treats from the Natural Candy Store. Each bag includes an assortment of organic fruit lollipops, naturally flavored cinnamon gum, natural chocolate bites (sort of like M&M's without all the funny chemical stuff), organic root beer float candies, and even gummy worms made with organic flavors. Delish, if not exactly nutrish. But if you're looking for healthy alternatives to the usual trick-or-treat fare, this is much less likely to produce exasperated eye-rolling than, say, dropping a toothbrush into their little plastic pumpkins. Halloween natural goody bag, $8 at NaturalCandyStore.com.Tuesday October 7th:
WORST ITEMS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: Although the term 'carbon footprint' seems to pop up a lot these days, how many people know what it really means? An item's footprint is actually the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that get coughed into the air when the goods are made, shipped and stored, and then used by consumers. Here are some surprising, and not-so-surprising measurements, courtesy of the Wall Street Journal:
- A Car (Toyaota Prius): 97,000 pounds
- Pair of hiking boots (Timbaland Winter Park Slip On Boots): 121 pounds.
- Fleece jacket (Patagonia Talus jacket): 66 pounds.
- Laundry Detergent (Non-Biological Liquid Wash): 31 pounds.
- Half-Gallon of Milk (Organic Dairy): 7.2 pounds.
- Six-Pack of Beer:7 pounds.
